1st Graders Response Program
Edward and Bryce

Mother's Day is normally a day of joy and celebration, but for Christy Stewart, Mother's Day 2009 forever changed that. On this particluar Sunday morning, Stewart's father Edward, and her seven year-old son Bryce set out to go fishing at a reservoir behind a popular apartment community. It was a special activity the two had shared many times before, but on this fateful day, it turned into tragedy.

Christy's son Bryce had just celebrated his 7th birthday in Dallas, Texas, and asked his momma to go fishing with his Paw-Paw and him. So Christy, Bryce, and the rest of the family traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana that Mother’s Day weekend so that Bryce could go fishing with his Paw-Paw.

After waiting out a bit of morning rain, Edward and Bryce headed out to go fishing as they had done so many times before. Several hours had passed, when Christy and the family realized that Edward and Bryce had been gone for a much longer time than was usual for them, and they began to get worried. They started out to the resevoir where they knew Edward and Bryce had gone. What they found when they got there is something that they will never be able to forget. Edward's hat was floating on top of the water, with their fishing gear close by, but there was no sign of Edward or Bryce anywhere. It was at that moment that Christy's heart sank inside her chest, and she was filled with disbelief and despair. Christy's worst fears were realized when Edward and Bryce's lifeless bodies were found.

Following much needed grief counseling, and time to heal, Christy began to reflect on what she could do to make certain that no one else would have to endure the pain that she did.

Since that tragic day, Christy Stewart has dedicated herself to making a difference with child water safety and celebrating other grandparents relationships.
