1st Graders Response Program

1st Graders Respnse Program

The 1st Graders Response Program is an injury prevention program design to educate young children on water safety. It is our foundation’s mission to have an impact on Public Health and an influence on local ordinance and state legislation. The Foundation’s injury prevention program will operate from January to June of every year. The program will help to reduce the mortality rate of the second leading cause of child death by unintentional injury through education and providing life vests. Life vests will be given out to children before leaving the school system for the summer. The program’s curriculum was design by the founder of My Paw-Paw and Me Foundation, Christy Stewart, MSW.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate high risk situations and incidents of required reporting.
  2. Aid in development of skill building; help young children make the right decision when faced with a traumatic event. Teaches (1) STOP, (2) LOOK, (3) LISTEN, (4) REPORT. Teaches diversion techniques and basic medical knowledge on drowning.
  3. Teaches how to be safe around any standing body of water.
  4. Teaches what signage to look for around any body of water and how to read them. Example includes water depths measuring poles.
  5. Demonstrate how to properly put on personal floatation devices, such as life vest.
  6. Teaches a Play-Safe Norm, which encourages young children to learn to use a life vest while playing within 5 feet of any body of water.

The Program targets schools that are located:
